Hologic Mammos

Hologic has been the dominant force in the 3D mammography space since 2011, with widespread market adoption, extensive third-party support, and consistent innovation. Their systems make up approximately 70% of the market and are the most requested and stocked in the pre-owned space.

Pros:

  • Most widely used and trusted brand in 3D mammography
  • Broad availability of refurbished systems
  • Excellent third-party parts and engineering support
  • Strong resale value and market familiarity
  • Consistently upgraded product line

Cons:

  • Higher cost due to high demand
  • Competitive pricing may reduce savings compared to other OEMs

Top Mammography Machines:

GE Mammos

GE entered the 3D mammography market more recently with its flagship system, the Senographe Pristina. While it offers appealing features and ergonomic design, GE has lower market share and therefore less presence in the pre-owned space.

Pros:

  • Modern design focused on patient comfort
  • Newer model (Pristina Via) offers updated features
  • Known for cross-modality equipment consistency

Cons:

  • Limited availability on the secondary market
  • Less robust third-party support network than Hologic
  • Demand is lower compared to Hologic

Top Mammography Machine:

Siemens Mammos

Siemens has made strides in 3D mammography with the Mammomat Revelation and the newly announced b.Brilliant. These machines are great. However, market penetration remains limited, and used inventory is relatively low, so keep that in mind as you consider their mammography options.

Pros:

  • Strong imaging pedigree in other modalities
  • Advanced features in newer models
  • Moderate availability of pre-owned systems

Cons:

  • Smaller market share in 3D mammography
  • Limited third-party support
  • Lower demand impacts resale value and inventory

Top Mammography Machine:

  • Siemens Mammomat Revelation

Fujifilm Mammos

Fujifilm’s Aspire Cristalle system is technically capable and aesthetically appealing but has the smallest market share among the top OEMs. As a result, it's harder to find used and as a result, has a smaller base of support.

Pros:

  • Unique design and image processing technology
  • Competitive pricing on new units
  • Lightweight and space-efficient

Cons:

  • Very limited availability on secondary market
  • Least established third-party support
  • Low overall demand in the U.S.

Top Mammography Machines:

  • Fuji Aspire Cristalle

Top Requested Models

There’s a clear headliner in the U.S. market: Hologic. Owning roughly 70% of the mammography space, it’s no surprise that Hologic systems like the Dimensions and 3Dimensions are the most commonly requested and most frequently stocked in our inventory.

Aside from Hologic, the other systems that appear the most in our requests are:

The Future of Refurbished Mammo

In late 2024, at RSNA—the world’s largest imaging trade show—every major OEM unveiled their newest generation 3D mammography system:

  • Hologic Envision
  • GE Senographe Pristina Via
  • Siemens b.Brilliant

Each new model brings unique features and advancements to the table. However, don't expect to see these newer systems hit the pre-owned market immediately. Due to the high cost of new systems and the typical equipment depreciation timeline, these machines are unlikely to become available on the secondary market for another 3–7 years, barring distressed sales or early trade-ins.

That said, if you're planning for future growth or budgeting long-term, it’s worth keeping these newer models on your radar.

Supporting Your Pre-Owned Mammo

If you’re considering buying pre-owned, a major question is: Will I be able to support this system after the purchase?

The short answer: yes—but your strategy depends on the system.

Third-party service providers often offer a more affordable alternative to OEM service contracts. Many engineers originally trained by OEMs have transitioned into third-party roles, bringing their expertise with them.

These providers also tend to stock parts based on market demand, which is why Hologic systems have the most extensive third-party coverage—parts, expertise, and responsiveness.

But this doesn’t mean that third-party support doesn’t exist for GE, Siemens, and Fuji. You’ll just want to confirm with your service partner has parts and engineers available in your area before making a decision.
