OEC 9800 Vs. OEC 9900: Image Quality

GE OEC 9800

The OEC 9800 and OEC 9900 are both equipped with the same 1k x1k x 16 imaging chain, which means that their imaging quality is very similar. However, one of the main differences when it comes to imaging quality is that the 9800 uses 16" CRT monitors, while the 9900 features 18" articulating flat panel monitors.

Keep in mind that if you're seeking the same imaging quality as the OEC 9900, you can always consider upgrading your flat-screen monitor.

GE OEC 9900

One of the biggest improvements that GE made to the 9900 was replacing the CRT-style monitors.  With their swivel panel setup, the new LED monitors can be adjusted for optimal viewing angles while working on patients.

This upgrade in monitors is the primary reason for the enhanced resolution, brightness, and contrast that you'll find in the OEC 9900.

OEC 9800 vs. OEC 9900: Hardware and Software Features

If you’re used to the OEC 9800, the OEC 9900 will have a similar feel and footprint.

The X-ray tube, generator, image intensifier, steering, hardware, and C-arm movements are all the same. When comparing the technical aspects of OEC 9800 and OEC 9900, there is quite a bit of overlap but some distinct differences.

The OEC 9900 boasts over 51 features in its technical brochure, but we'll focus on the key features that will have the greatest impact on your purchasing decision.

  • Added HIPAA Secure View.

  • Did away with the floppy drives in favor of USB/DVD.

  • Added pre-set image profiles for each configuration.

  • Increased the onboard static image storage dramatically.

  • Articulating flat-screen monitor displays.

  • "Re-branded” the basic Vas 8 FPS as the PM care 8 FPS and the OEC 9800 Neurovascular 30 FPS became the OEC 9900 Vascular MTS.

  • The hard drives of the 9900 are more modern and have a much larger capacity.

OEC 9800 vs OEC 9900: Cost Comparison

GE OEC 9800

On average refurbished OEC 9800s typically fall in the low to mid $40,000 range.

If you tack on service costs and monitor upgrades you're looking at adding an average cost of $7,500-$15,000 onto the initial price.

Being that the OEC 9800 is extremely similar to the OEC 9900, it really "wins" in one area: price point. Many of the same tasks one could perform on an OEC 9900 (especially tasks that use the GSP or ESP software platforms) can be done on a 9800 and for a lower capital expense.

GE OEC 9900

Typically refurbished OEC 9900s fall in the average mid-low $70,000 range.

Service costs, additional accessories, and ongoing maintenance should also be taken into consideration when budgeting for an OEC 9900. These costs can vary depending on the provider and the level of service needed but can fall in the $10,000-$20,000+ range.

It's important to factor in these additional expenses to get a comprehensive understanding of the total cost of ownership for the OEC 9900 and OEC 9800. For more extensive C-Arm pricing information, check out our comprehensive C-Arm Price Guide!

The Takeaway

As you explore the options available, ask yourself these questions:

  • What specialty will this C-Arm be used for?
